Healthy churches are building authentic Christian community together.
What does it mean to build community? Essentially it means to live a common life. This doesn’t mean we pool our resources or move to a commune. It means the Christian life is not lived on an island somewhere. We live as Christians together, sharing the struggles, challenges, victories, failures, and joys with each other.
Building community means we learn to love others as God loves us - and them. We are self-sacrificing, genuine, sincere. When one person rejoices we all rejoice. When someone hurts, we all hurt. Building community means we learn to live like the body lives; hit your small toe on a dresser in the night and your entire body goes into shock! We want our church to be like that.
The primary means for building community is through small gatherings of people that we call Community Groups (now that is creative). These weekly gatherings focus on building relationships around the Gospel. Our families are able to get to know each other genuinely. An informal, smaller setting in a home is a much better way to build community than meeting in a large group. In fact, Sunday mornings are for Bible study and worship, not community-building. We build community all week long as we share our common faith in Jesus Christ and gather in Community Groups from September to May. During the summer we’ll be having other social events to help us grow in authentic Christian community.
